My Body Doesn’t Bend That Way…

by Ginger de Vegh

Yeah, I’ve done Yoga.  Not well, mind you, but, I’ve done it.  You see my problem is, although I think Yoga is an amazing, beautiful spiritual practice – my lack of being consistent with my practice of it, is well, bad.  ugh.  It’s like the whole gym/exercise thing for me.  I just can’t seem to be consistent and “addicted” to it like most people.  Or, maybe I’m just lazy.  Who knows.  But I do know this – I am intrigued and think the art of Yoga is just beautiful and mesmerizing…and sometimes look painful!    My preference has always been more simplistic Yoga – you know, Downward Dog, Sun Salutations, etc…meditative…. calm.  Within the “boundaries” of what I “think” my body can do. (and btw, I always amaze myself when I see what I am actually capable of! Go Figure!)

I met Corbin several years ago….and something just “clicked” with us, immediately.  He is such a kind soul, with a heart of gold, and I’ve been fortunate to know this man and become good friends…  I admire not only his professional growth with Jet Blue (10 years!), but also his personal & spiritual growth by becoming a Certified Barkan Method Hot Yoga Instructor recently.  We’ve been planning a photoshoot for at least 3 years now – and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

Our shoot was inspiring in many ways – 1st, just watching this man contort his body in ways I didn’t think possible, but also spiritually… As he bent and moved, it was like watching a form of poetry thru my lens…. watching his determination, focus, gratitude….It was a form of beauty…. I’ll share a quote that one of his friends, Emily Lundy, wrote about one of the pictures that I felt summed up his practice, as well as the photography and mood that we Both felt from that day –  “You captured the soul, the spirit, of yoga and the yogi, the devotion, the journey!  not just a man in a yoga pose, but the yoga within the man! not just the beauty that lies on the surface but you captured the beauty, the light from within!”

I think after I did this shoot, I gained a new respect and desire myself, to re-visit my relationship with Yoga and Meditation….

And a quote from Corbin, when asked which picture from the shoot was his favorite:: “THIS is my absolute favorite photo – even down to the sweat pellet dripping from my chin … It has totally captured the yogic path; what we stand for and live by … In essence, this IS yoga!!”

and…one of my favorites from the day….  Love and Light my friend, Namaste.

Til next time,
